ESTA Provisions & Policy

Michigan’s new Earned Sick Time Act (ESTA) is designed to support employee well-being, and TDC is committed to ensuring that our team benefits from these protections. Under this law, we are pleased to extend paid, earned sick time to our hourly employees. This initiative aligns with our ongoing commitment to a healthy, supportive workplace. Here are some key provisions of the act that apply to TDC:

  • Employees accrue one hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked

  • Employers can limit sick time use to 72 hours per year

  • Employees can roll over unused paid sick time up to 72 hours

The following sections describe changes to TDC’s policies to comply with these provisions. Any questions should be directed to Heidi.

Changes for Hourly Staff

Hourly staff will now accrue 1 hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked and will be allowed to carry over up to 72 hours of unused sick time to the next school year (beginning on September 1). Paid sick time can be used for either an employee’s illness or for that of a family member and should be requested via a Sick Pay Request Form (below). We will update each staff member with a report of available sick time on each pay stub. These changes began retroactively on February 21, 2025, the date on which ESTA became law. Sick pay is available to permanent hourly staff once they have been employed by TDC for 30 days. Seasonal staff (e.g., individuals hired for the summer) do not qualify for paid sick time.
