Why Multi-Age Classes?
At The Discovery Center, our preschool classrooms include students from the age of 2.5-5. This approach creates opportunities for children to learn from one another while building lasting relationships over time. In a multi-age classroom, younger children natural observe and learn from older classmates, while older children strengthen their own confidence, communication, and leadership skills by modeling positive behaviors and language. Every child contributes to the classroom culture in different ways, creating an environment where children are encouraged to learn at their own pace rather than being compared solely by age.
Children benefit from the continuity that comes with remaining in the same classroom as they grow. Instead of adjusting to a new classroom, teachers, and group of classmates each year, our students continue learning in a familiar environment with trusted adults and peers. These lasting relationships help children feel secure, build confidence, and approach new experiences with greater independence.
A multi-age classroom also reflects the relationships children will experience outside of school. Just as families include people of different ages, our classrooms encourage children to build friendships with classmates of varying ages, abilities, and developmental levels. These daily interactions help children develop empathy, cooperation, respect, and a strong sense of belonging.
