October Highlights

Happy Fall, families!

We’ve made a smooth transition into the new school year.  October is a busy month at The Discovery Center, which includes classroom open houses, Lions Club eye screening, School Pictures, speech-language & occupational screening from A2 Therapy Works, music with Gemini and Storytelling with Laura. You can view all of the dates below on our event calendar. Here’s everything happening this month:

Classroom Open Houses

During the month of October each classroom will hold an open house from 6-7pm.  This is a great opportunity for families to meet one another and see what students have been doing in their classrooms the first month of school.  You’ll be getting an invitation to your classroom’s open house, but here’s a quick reminder of the dates scheduled for open houses:

Wednesday, October 2 - Green Room

Tuesday, October 8 - Blue Room

Wednesday, October 9 - Red Room

Monday, October 14 - Purple Room

Tuesday, October 15 - Yellow Room (Young 5s)

Wednesday, October 16 - Orange Room (half day class)

Lions Club Eye Screening

Wednesday October 8

Thursday, October 9

Each year in October, the Lions Club offers free eye screenings for our students.  The screening is quick and easy.  The students will come to my office and a quick picture of their eyes will be taken.  You will need to fill out and sign a consent form in order for your child to be screened.  If you did not receive a consent form please ask your child’s teacher for one.  You will receive a referral letter if there are any concerns with your child’s screening.  Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

School Pictures   October 15-17

Tuesday, October 15 - Blue Room & Orange Room

Wednesday, October 16 - Red Room & Green Room

Thursday, October 17 -  Purple Room & Yellow Room

If your child doesn’t attend school on your classroom's scheduled photo day, they can be photographed on one of the days they do attend.  We would like every student to have their picture taken for the class composite, even if you don’t decide to purchase a picture package.

A2 Therapy Works October 22

A2 Therapy Works is offering free screenings for speech and occupational therapy. If you would like your child to receive a screening, please fill out the consent form.

Storytelling and Music

Our students always look forward to storytelling with Laura and music with Gemini.  Laura will be here to tell her amazing stories on October 10th.  Gemini will be here to sing and dance with our students on October 23rd.

Classroom Highlight - Green Room!

Teachers: Jackie, Becci, Michelle, & Lola

Green Room had a unit on apples. With the apple tree STEM, children used a variety of materials (cardboard tubes, felt, popsicle sticks and apples) to make apple trees. Some tried to see how many apples they could get to stay on their tree.

The kids worked on a patterning activity using stickers. This activity addressed pattern practice (math skill) as well as peeling and placing the sticker to build their fine motor skills. This strengthens their hands as well as pincher practice to support holding a writing implement eventually.

These were the highlights of Green Room's apple unit.

Lastly, if you would like to share your contact information with your child’s classroom, please fill out the classroom contacts form.

I look forward to attending each classroom open house and meeting all of you!
